The
Coast to the Northeast of Pickering is known
as The Heritage Coast and is an extremely beautiful
and rugged stretch of nature within half an hour's
drive. Due north of Hungate is the sailing town of Whitby,
the adopted home of Captain Cook and his gateway
to the seas. His statue stands
on the west cliff and the Captain
Cook Memorial Museum is located in his old house
on Grape Lane. Also worth seeing in Whitby are Whitby
Abbey, The
Enamel Workshop and W.Hammond -
The original Whitby Jet shop. Heading down the coast
you arrive at the wonderful holiday town of Scarborough.
Holiday attractions here include the Scarborough
Sea Life & Marine Sanctuary and the Kinderland
Fun Park. Alternatively, if you prefer a little
less action then Scarborough Castle
or The
Stained Glass Centre may be more to your liking.
As you head further on you'll find the spectacular Bempton
Cliffs Nature Reserve - home to over 200,000
nesting seabirds and a very popular national destination
for birdwatchers too. Nature lovers will also appreciate
the opportunity to visit the Staintondale
Shire Horse Farm, Wellington
Lodge Llama Treking and , The
Grainary Wildlife Farm. Other pastimes offered
in the area include Wykeham
Lakes Trout Fishing and of historical interest The
Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum and Saltburn
Inclined Tramway. |
